What excites me about the BioTransform project is the opportunity to bridge research with clinical practice through a truly multidimensional approach. By combining human studies with microbiome mapping, metabolomics, and in vitro and in silico models, we can better understand how bioactive compounds work in real-life conditions.

DC3: A blinded placebo-controlled human pilot study for the investigation of the role of bilberry and olive bioactives on oxidative stress parameters and inflammatory markers – Relevance in a South-European population

Supervisor: Prof. Nikolaos Tentolouris

Co-Supervisors: Prof. Nina Hermans, Natural Products & Food Research and Analysis – Pharmaceutical Technology (NatuRAPT), University of Antwerp, Belgium (Academic); Dr. Job Tchoumtchoua, CELABOR, Herve, Belgium (Industrial)

Secondments: This project is carried out in strong collaboration with the following groups, and visits to their laboratories are expected during the project:

  • Natural Products & Food Research and Analysis – Pharmaceutical Technology (NatuRAPT), University of Antwerp, Belgium
  • Department of Life Sciences, University of Bath (UBath), United Kingdom
  • CELABOR, Herve, Belgium
Project description

My project focuses on a blinded, placebo-controlled human pilot study investigating the effects of bioactive compounds from bilberries and olives on oxidative stress and inflammation. The scientific objective is to generate clinical evidence on how these compounds influence key biomarkers related to metabolic health.

From a translational perspective, the project contributes to the broader BioTransform goal by providing human data that supports the understanding and potential application of food bioactives in health-related contexts.

Professional background

I am Christina Sykontimi, a dietitian- nutritionist and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Candidate (DC3) in the BioTransform project at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), School of Medicine.

My background combines Nutrition and Dietetics, from Harokopio University and Biomedical Sciences, from Maastricht University. I have clinical experience in hospital settings, including palliative care, as well as in private practice.

My research has focused on nutritional assessment, its impact on clinical outcomes, and the integration of innovative tools in healthcare settings. I aim to contribute to the development of evidence-based nutritional strategies for disease improved clinical outcomes.
