Prof. Dr. Emmy Tuenter

Assistant Professor

The Biotransform project involves multidisciplinary research in an international context and offers a great opportunity for the selected PhD candidates to gain experience in research and to develop themselves further on a professional level. It is a wonderful opportunity to take part in this MSCA Doctoral Networks project as member of the coordinating institute, and I look forward to collaborating with the entire consortium and to the new insights this project will provide.

Professional background

Emmy Tuenter (1989) is assistant professor (100%) at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Antwerp (2023-present). She is member of the research group NatuRAPT (Natural Products & Food Research and Analysis – Pharmaceutical Technology). Prof. Tuenter’s research is aimed at the phytochemical characterization of medicinal plants, marine organisms, and food products of natural origin, with a particular focus on bioactive products with a beneficial impact on human health. In order to achieve this goal, various chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (e.g. HPLC-DAD, LC-MS, NMR) are applied in combination with data processing tools, like Molecular Networking and Multivariate Analysis. Furthermore, she is involved in the study of the gastrointestinal biotransformation, bioavailability, and liver metabolism after oral intake of these natural products. Finally, she is director of the University Centre for the Analysis of Pharmaceuticals and Health Products (UCAG2). This Centre is part of the NatuRAPT research group and is GMP licensed for quality control of pharmaceuticals and food supplements.
